Chiatura and Katskhi Pillar Tour. We travel to the Zemo Imereti region in western Georgia. Our first stop is Chiatura, a town famous for its Soviet-era cable car, which despite its rusty and dilapidated appearance is home to one of the world’s most stunning engineering marvels, incorporating manganese mines Connected to residential areas of the city. Ride the Chiatura Cable car and visit the 13th-century Mghvimevi Monastery. Next stop is the Katskhi Pillar, a natural limestone monolith in the village of Katskhi near Chiatura. Its mystical aura has made it a center of worship since the first humans immigrated to the area. The church’s builders were likely early Christian ascetics who preached and prayed on the pillars. The pillar has been a sacred site to pagans for a long time, most likely used for fertility rites. With the rise of Christianity in Georgia in the fourth century AD, it became a symbol of escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Climbing is prohibited and only one monk lives at the top. After leaving Katskhi we will drive to Ubisa Monastery to admire its extraordinary 14th century frescoes. Next stop is the “Pottery Market” in the village of Shrosha; after a short shopping trip we return to Tbilisi.
