Sacred Armenia Day Tour: From Pagan Garni to Holy Etchmiadzin
Armenia’s Ancient Temples, UNESCO Monasteries & Sacred Landmarks in One Day
Duration: Approx. 10 hours
This comprehensive day tour introduces you to Armenia’s most iconic historical, religious, and cultural landmarks, combining ancient pagan heritage, early Christianity, and breathtaking landscapes.
🏛 Tour Highlights
Garni Temple – Pagan Heritage of Armenia
Start the day by visiting the Temple of Garni, the only standing Greco-Roman pagan temple in Armenia, located in the village of Garni. Built in the 1st century AD, the temple is dedicated to the sun god Mithra and survived Armenia’s conversion to Christianity.
After being destroyed by an earthquake in 1679, the temple was carefully reconstructed, and today it stands as one of Armenia’s most visited historical sites, surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.
Geghard Monastery – UNESCO World Heritage Site
Continue to Geghard Monastery, a masterpiece of medieval Armenian architecture located deep within the Azat River Gorge.
Founded by St. Gregory the Illuminator, the monastery is partly carved into the rock and offers stunning panoramic views of the Geghama mountain range. Since 2000, Geghard has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its spiritual and architectural significance.
Traditional Lunch & Lavash Experience (Optional)
In Garni village, you may enjoy lunch and take part in the traditional preparation of Armenian lavash bread, baked in a clay oven known as a tonir.
Khor Virap Monastery – Mount Ararat Viewpoint
Next, visit the iconic Khor Virap Monastery, located at the foot of the biblical Mount Ararat.
According to legend, St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned here for 13 years before Christianity became Armenia’s state religion. Khor Virap is one of Armenia’s most photographed sites, offering breathtaking views of Mount Ararat and the Armenian-Turkish border.
Etchmiadzin – Spiritual Center of Armenia
Continue to Etchmiadzin (Vagharshapat), the spiritual capital of Armenia and the seat of the Armenian Apostolic Church.
Visit the Etchmiadzin Cathedral, built in the early 4th century after Armenia adopted Christianity as the world’s first Christian state.
Also explore St. Gayane and St. Hripsime Churches, magnificent 7th-century monuments listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Zvartnots Cathedral – Ancient Architectural Wonder
On the way back to Yerevan, stop at the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral, built in the 7th century and once considered one of the grandest churches of medieval Armenia.
Although destroyed by an earthquake in the 10th century, the cathedral was partially reconstructed in the 1940s, and today its ruins remain a remarkable archaeological and historical site.
Return to Yerevan at the end of the day tour.
