Tbilisi & Mtskheta Day Tour From Dilijan
Early morning, head to Tbilisi, Georgia which is one of the most attractive capitals in Caucasus with its – boulevards, charming old churches and the rich Georgian culture. Visit the historical part of Old Tbilisi, Metekhi Church, dated back to the 13th century. Get unforgettable panoramic views over the river Mtkvari and the main attractions of Old Tbilisi, such as Narikala Fortress – the ancient symbol of the city, Sioni built in 6th-7th AD, synagogue, the only remaining mosque in Tbilisi, etc. Visit Abanotubani (sulfur baths) which is a historical place at the foot of Narikala.
According to the legend, King of Iberia discovered hot springs and subsequently found a new capital Tbilisi (“Tbili” means “worm, hot”, therefore, the name is derived from the hot springs). Walk in Sharden, the pedestrian street, one of the beloved places for local people as well as for tourists, lots of cafés, restaurants, clubs and galleries are located here.
Visit Mtskheta – an old capital of Iberia kingdom (from IV BC to VI AD), at a short distance beyond Tbilisi. Nobody can understand the Georgian spirituality without visiting the ancient royal and religious capital of Mtskheta. Next stop is Jvari (Cross) Monastery perched on a hill and overlooking the union of the Aragvi and Kura rivers. Finally, visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (“Life-giving column”) – 11th AD- where according to the biography of a Georgian Saint, Christ’s robe is buried. Return to Dilijan at the end of the tour.
